Grit and Grazia: A Story of Venice, Voga, and a Few Unwavering Women

A documentary project of Living Venice e VIVA

Bringing the Serenissima home

Posted on | September 6, 2008 | No Comments

This Saturday afternoon, the 50-year-old Serenissima will be transferred from Burano back to its home in the Arsenale, just in time to perform its lead role in Sunday’s Regata Storica. In fact, a crew of 18 women will propel the craft for the first time in the festival’s history.

The amazing, expert, one-week restoration carried out by Cantiere Amadi of Burano was necessary after the craft was found submerged on June 2.

The Project

The voga alla veneta is the unique rowing style - standing up, facing forward - that the Venetian gondolier employs to thread his craft through the city's narrow canals. This documentary project will explore the lifestyle and the culture that lies behind the voga: one that is as vital, as old, and as convoluted the Venetian rii themselves.
